What Can I Expect to Happen?

Should you wish to work with us here at APT we can have a brief telephone conversation about the problem as it is often possible to see if a problem is suitable for CBT or not by asking a few simple questions. If the problem sounds as though it might be suitable we will arrange an assessment at a time that is convenient.

Our first meeting will be an assessment to confirm your problems are suitable for CBT and if so, what interventions are likely to help. The assessment will take about 1 – 1½ hours and by the end you and your therapist should both be able to agree precisely what the problem is, what is maintaining it and what can be done to manage it enabling you to make an informed decision regarding management of your problem.

Should you wish to proceed with CBT you can expect future treatment sessions to be focussed on learning about the techniques most likely to improve your problem. You will then be asked to practice these techniques between sessions.

Our ultimate objective is to teach you how to mange your problems yourself, as quickly as possible, so you will find relief from distress now and be able to manage the problem independently in the future without having to rely on others or seek further help.
